Mass incarceration in the United States criminal justice system has now become a humanitarian issue. Statistically, the United States has 5% of the world’s population but 25% of the world’s incarcerated population. There are 7.5 million individuals under some form of correctional supervision with 2.5 million individuals in prison at the moment.
One in less than 100 hundred Americans is behind bars. The racial statistics are even more staggering. Hispanics and African Americans make up the largest amount of those behind bars. With 13% of the total population of the United States, African American men and boys make up over 40% of those in jails, prisons or under some form of correctional supervision.
According to the Pew Trust, the fastest growing amount of those imprisoned is African American and Hispanic women. It has been concluded by legal analysts and prison reform advocates that the subtle and ultimate implications of mass incarceration in the United States criminal justice system is the breakdown of family structures, communities and an increase in poverty.
Your donation will go a long way to make this conference a success. Community revitalization through prison reform and strategic solution development and intervention in this high rate of incarceration and recidivism are our goals. We will be bringing together reentry professionals, students, politicians and community leaders, prison reform activists, clergy and prison ministry experts, concern individuals etc.
We look forward to your support.
